LoRa is a LPWAN (Low Power Wide Area Network) radio technology that enables long range transmission for objects with modest power consumption allowing using a small battery for several years and keeping the things connected. LoRa acts in the free sub-giga Hertz band, mainly 868 MHz(Europe and 915 MHz (North and South America) and allows transmission in the order of 10+ kilometres. The structure of the network provide the existence of at least a LoRa gateway covering a wide area, able to manage thousands end points ( meters ,temperature sensors, humidity sensors , motion sensors etc) collecting data from them and uploading to the cloud.
Over the LoRa physical layer enabling te long range communication , an upper layer was developed to manage the connection between gateways and end nodes. This is the LoRaWAN standard and its elected as interoperability pre-requisites for an end point as for the gateways to be able to operate together even if produced by different manufacturers , that’s the starting point for an integrated IoT network including several types of devices.
